Saad El-Katatni, Essam El-Erian and Mohamed Abu Baraka announce their intention to stand for chairmanship of Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party
Three senior members of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), Saad El-Katatni, Essam El-Erian and Mohamed Abu-Baraka, have announced their intention to stand for the party chairmanship vacated by President Mohamed Morsi.Former speaker of parliament El-Katatni was the first in line, submitting his application on Sunday.
El-Erian is the party's vice-chairman and current acting chairman.
"I've consulted those I respect, prayed for God's guidance and today at 11am, I'll submit my application for the ballot [to become chairman]," El-Erian said via Twitter on Monday.
Abu Baraka, the FJP's lawyer, announced his intention to stand on Monday during an interview with the Sada El-Balad satellite channel.
Baraka also stated that women were entitled to run for the position.
The result of the internal FJP ballot will be announced on 19 October during the party's annual conference.
Other contenders for the position are: Sabah El-Saqari, a leading female member of the party's women's committee in Cairo, and Khaled Ouda, a lawyer and leader of the party's parliamentary affairs committee.
