Tour operators are gradually returning to Egypt after the State Department downgraded its travel warning last week.
Both G Adventures and Abercrombie & Kent will resume their Egyptian itineraries in 2014. Tourism has fallen since the January 2011 revolution, but was gaining traction early in the year -- 127,000 Americans visited between January and June. Deadly clashes in the summer sparked the latest State Department warning.
G Adventures, which pulled out in August, will resume its Egypt programs on Jan. 1. Its eight-day Best of Egypt tour costs from $999 per person, not including international airfare. A&K has a nine-day trip departing in March accompanied by company president Phil Otterson and limited to 18 participants. Cost starts at $3695 per person.
British operator Discover Egypt resumed cruises earlier this month.
In its updated travel alert, the State Department cautions Americans that "political unrest ... is likely to continue in the near future" and advises that reports of crime have increased since the revolution.
