Minister Of Immigration Nabila Makram - YOUM7CAIRO: A “large number” of Egyptian doctors who live abroad have welcomed an initiative to operate on poor Egyptian patients for free, according to a Sunday statement by the Migration Ministry.
“Resounding success of Egyptian doctors abroad has always caught my attention while working at Egyptian embassies… Once I was appointed as a Minister of State for Migration, I thought of the idea to ask for their help in relieving the pain of their compatriots at home,” Migration Minister Nabila Makram said in the statement.
After Prime Minister Sherif Ismail approved the initiative, Makram decided to begin with liver operations, since liver diseases are common among Egyptians.
Egypt has the highest rate of hepatitis C infection in the world, nearly 15 percent of the population, according to World Health Organization statistics.
Makram received several applications from Egyptian doctors of different specializations to participate in the initiative, the statement said.
She called on Egyptian liver surgeons who live abroad to send their application to [email protected], saying that she had agreed with the Health Ministry to conduct the operation in February.
An integrated program will be executed for doctors during their visit to Egypt and “all facilitations will be provided” to help them carry out their missions, according to the statement.
